Firefox Browser

Firefox browser is a popular open source browser. It offers more features than Internet Explorer and is more compatible with websites than Opera. The latest release version 3 of Firefox includes new features such as improved performance, phish site detection, and updated appearance.

While these new features are nice, it is Firefox's security, compatibility, add-ons, and built-in spell checking that makes it such a good alternative to Internet Explorer.








Mozilla offers free firefox add-ons created by users and web businesses. Listed on this page are firefox add-ons that I have found useful.

Alerts & Updates

  1. Flagfox by Dave G. (site) - Displays a country flag in the status bar showing the location of the current websites server. By clicking on the flag, you are transfers to site showing its location on a map showing along with detailed location and web server information.

Appearance (User Interface)

  1. FireGestures by Gomita (site) - This Opera (mouse gestures) like feature uses the mouse to page forward/backwards, switch tabs, open multiple links, and others. For a list of features, see site. To view your settings for this add-on in Firefox. On the main toolbar click Tools > Add-ons. Highlight FireGestures and click options. Click mappings.  When done click OK and close the Add-ons panel.

    To use a mouse gesture click and hold the mouse right button, perform the gesture. For example to reload the current page press the right button, move the mouse Up and Down, and then release the button.

  2. Gmail Manager by Todd Long (site) - Automatically checks all your GMAIL accounts for new messages. Then just click on the account you to have open to read your messages.  

Bookmarks

  1. Fast Dial by telega (site) - This Opera (speed dial) like feature provides fast access to your favorite sites through thumbnails on a new tab. Do not install version 2.15 it is stuffed with adware. Use version 2.11 which can be downloaded from Softpedia.
  2. For sharing bookmarks between PC's and Browsers I use LinkaGoGo's web based bookmark tool. After creating a free account, you just need to add a link to Firefox's toolbar. Then just click on this link to bookmark the site.

Download Manager

  1. DownThemAll! by Federico Parodi, Nils Maier, Stefano Verna (site) - Download all the links and images on a web page.

Feed, News & Blogging

  1. BBCode by Jed Brown, Mel Reyes (aka: mrtech) (site) - Adds BBCode, HTML, XHTML & Symbols formatting to the context menu for forums. I have not tried it yet but plan to.

Language Support

  1. Add-ons that translate languages, switch dictionaries, and look up words.
